Thank you to everyone who attended CVR 2017

CVR 2017 was a resounding success, we hope everyone had as much fun as we did! We welcomed 750 attendees on Industry Day and over 5000 guests through the expo days. We'd like to thank all of the attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, speakers and volunteers who attended CVR 2017. It wouldn't have been possible without the support of each and every one of you. We hope CVR 2017 was an opportunity to make new connections, try new experiences and meet others interested in the VR space.

From the beginning, our mission has been to share the experience of VR with as many people as we can. VR is a transformative technology that will change the way we live, and do business. We had a great time seeing the reactions from people trying VR for the first time. We are especially honored to be able to bring together local and international exhibitors together in Vancouver to celebrate VR.

The 4 Tools You Need to Start Learning VR

(Level: Beginner)                                                                                                                                                                     (Platform: Windows and Mac)

You need 4 tools to start learning virtual reality development and the best part is, all of them can be downloaded for free! In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps for downloading and installing the essential tools and provide you with a couple bonus resources. If this is all new for you, don’t worry! Simply follow the steps in the article below and things will become more familiar as you begin to learn how to create VR games in Unity.

1. Unity

To create a virtual reality game or experience you’re going to need a 3D game engine. There are two major engines for virtual reality development, Unity 3D and Unreal. We recommend using Unity, download the latest free personal version of Unity from www.unity3d.com/get-unity/.

You can use Unity with a Mac or Windows computer to develop virtual reality applications.

In this article, we’re focusing on the tools needed for creating a mobile VR game. Download and install Unity. During the installation, when the Choose Components window pops-up, select Android Build Support if developing for an Android, or iOS Build Support if you’re developing for an iPhone.

2) Google VR

The next step is to download the Google VR SDK for Unity from https://developers.google.com/vr/unity/. The Google VR SDK for Unity let’s you create VR applications for Google Cardboard and Google Daydream on an Android and for Google Cardboard on an iOS device. To download the file click on the link Download the Google VR SDK at the bottom of the page under the heading “To more more:” then click on the Download SDK button.

The Google VR SDK provides several files and tools used for VR development.

3) Android Studio

Next we’ll need the android SDK and Android Studio (Android’s developer tools). Visit developer.android.com/sdk and click on the Download Android Studio button.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Android Studio, launch the program. From the Android Studio home screen click configure and select SDK Manager then click on the SDK Tools tab.

If you’re using Windows, select the check box for Google USB drivers and click apply to install the drivers and establish a connection between the android SDK and any android phones you will be plugging into your computer via USB. This allows you to export the applications you create in Unity directly onto your phone for testing.

If you’re using a Mac and don’t see the option box for Google USB drivers, ignore the paragraph directly above and proceed with the steps below. We have included a section for iPhone (iOS) development in our next article, Creating Your First VR Project.

Leave the Android Studio window open.

4) Java Development Kit

The final download you’ll need for VR game development is the Java Development Kit (JDK). Search JDK in Google and click on the first link from Oracle.com. Select the blue download button, it’s labelled “Java Platform (JDK)”.

From the next page click on the download link for your windows platform (Windows x32 (86) or Windows x64). If you’re using a Mac, select Mac OS X. On your Mac you will also need to navigate back one page, and click the blue download button for the JRE. Download the JRE file for Mac OS X as well.

Double click to install the JDK file you downloaded (and JRE for Mac users) and on the first page of the install window, in the bottom left it should say Install to: C:\Program Files (x64)\Java\jdk (or something similar with the JDK version #). Copy that file path into a separate text editor like Notepad or Google Docs, we will need it in Unity. Once you’ve copied the file path, continue with the standard installation of the JDK.

Xcode (iPhone users only)

If you’re building for an iPhone, you will also need to download and install the latest version of Xcode (Apple’s developer tools) available from the Mac App Store.

Exhibitor Spotlight - DaGGaSoft

DaGGaSoft is bringing card games to Virtual Reality with the release of Manastorm: Champions of G'nar. In the game, you play as a spell casting, minion summoning, magic card playing, bow wielding wizard. The mechanics for the game are similar to many card games and table top RPG games. But there is an extra layer added with Virtual Reality, for example you can shoot arrows at your enemy. Make sure you practice your aim because your arrows will only do damage if it hits the target! So if you're a fan of Hearthstone, Magic the Gathering, or Yu-Gi-Oh you're definitely going to want to check out this game.

Exhibitor Spotlight - Metanaut

What could be more satisfying than starting a chain reaction of dominoes, marbles and contraptions? Luckily for you, on April 5, 2017 Metanaut released a pre-alpha version of their Virtual Reality puzzle game Ruberg. Ruberg is a virtual reality sandbox game that lets players build their own Rube Goldberg machines and share them with others. The best part is, you can have all the fun of setting up a real Rube Goldberg machine without having to deal with the mess afterwards. Make sure to visit Metanaut's booth and let out your inner child!

Exhibitor Spotlight - Game Cooks

Game Cooks is an independent studio founded in Beirut by two Lebanese brothers – Arz and Lebnan Nader. The studio got their start by developing mobile games and have 15 titles under their belt. In 2016, they entered the world of Virtual Reality to develop a new form of content to entertain an ever-expanding audience.

If you’ve seen the new trailer for Death Stranding by Kojima Productions, you might’ve noticed a character that closely resembles a director by the name of Guillermo del Toro. Our next exhibitor, Quantum Capture is the company responsible for bringing his character to life. Their mission is to offer the most realistic virtual humans to VR/AR content creators.

With their technology, the line between real and virtual people has become increasingly blurred. Not only do their simulations appear life-like, but they are also able to capture natural face and full body motion as well.

Exhibitor Spotlight - Secret Location

Our next exhibitor, Secret Location uses Virtual Reality to completely change the way that stories are told. They are an Emmy Award winning content studio that uses storytelling to launch products and solve problems. For the release of Insidious 3, they created an interactive 4D horror experience that left people with their heart racing. With Virtual Reality, viewers can immerse themselves into the story instead of watching it from behind a 2D screen.

They are also responsible for launching VUSR, a publishing tool that allows content creators to distribute VR content across all platforms. They will be demoing the capabilities of VUSR on Friday for industry day. On Saturday and Sunday they will be showcasing their bullet hell VR game, Blasters of the Universe. We can't wait to check it out!

The Story Behind CVR's Logo

The story behind the origin of the CVR logo is something we haven’t told before. Today, we’re going to cover how the logo came to be, what it represents and its significance. From the beginning, our mission has been to share the experience of VR with as many people as we can. We wholeheartedly believe that VR is a transformative technology that will change the way we live, and do business.

Trying virtual reality for the first time, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Often we find users are overwhelmed with a feeling of childlike wonder, and genuinely impressed with how advanced the technology is. With VR, AR, and MR the possibilities are endless. Archiact wants to bring immersive experiences of the highest calibre to the world with the CVR conference and expo.

We kept that in mind when designing the CVR logo because it is you that we want to represent: The blue circle and the “C” in CVR is a side-profile of a person wearing a VR headset. The “C” is the lens and the empty space in the circle is the headband.

That person is you, whether you’re a first-time user or a VR enthusiast, we wanted to highlight how important YOU are to the VR movement. Our dream is that everyone will be able to experience VR and realize the potential it has for completely revolutionizing our world.

5 Reasons Why VR & AR Are Reshaping Education

Confucious once said "Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand". His words still ring true in the 20th century as the challenge for educators to keep their students engaged in an increasingly digital world grows. However, with the development of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, a solution to this challenge may have been found. Many companies and educational institutes have already realized the educational potential of VR and AR, and have begun to work together to develop this area.

At their 2015 I/O Developer Conference, Google announced the launch of ‘Expeditions’, an app that lets teachers create virtual school trips using the company’s Cardboard virtual reality viewer. Since the launch, Google Expeditions Pioneer Programme has visited over 200,000 students in the UK alone and offers over 400 expeditions for students to access. Schools in the US are also incorporating VR and AR. Students in the San Francisco Unified School District and Polk County Public Schools in Florida are using VR technology to send classes on over 25 virtual field trip lessons that offer first-person tours of the ancient pyramids of Egypt, the caves on Easter Island, the marine biomes of the Great Barrier Reef, Mars, patriotic landmarks across the U.S., and much more!

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. The development of VR and AR for education is growing rapidly. Here are 5 ways VR and AR can reshape education and training:

  1. Educate Across Distances - VR and AR technology has made it possible to educate students across distances. L’Oréal USA recently announced a virtual reality training program for salon stylists. Instead of traveling across the country for trainings or watching two-dimensional YouTube videos, stylists will be able to learn new styling techniques with a VR headset. The L’Oréal VR training program features a stylist and a client. Students wearing VR headsets can take on the stylist’s role and watch the process or technique being taught from any angle.

  2. Accessibility To Challenging Locations - VR offers accessibility to experiences and locations that might not otherwise be accessible for educators and their students. For example, Google’s Expeditions offers classes a peek into Edinburgh Castle, viking settlements, and the day in the life of a surgeon while Immersive VR Education offers an Apollo 11 Experience where students experience the launch from the perspective of the astronauts.

  3. Engage Students and Improve Retention - VR and AR technologies help students learn by living and experiencing the subject for themselves, whether it be a virtual tour of the White House or performing a virtual surgery. VR and AR’s customizable nature allow students to be placed in any situation, where the outcome of the situation can change depending on the student’s actions/choice. This creates an environment of active learning for students. Furthermore, with a headset on, there are no outside distractions that may take away student’s attention. According to Immersive VR Education, simulation allows students to retain more information than traditional teaching methods due to its practical nature, as more senses are involved in the same learning experience. Students who learn best through seeing will find this style of learning as beneficial as students who learn best through hearing or doing.

  4. Improve Effectiveness of Training & Reduce Costs - VR is ideal for creating realistic simulations that help students or employees prepare for real life scenarios. The U.S Navy created an air-to-air combat simulation for their fighter pilots with this intention in mind. Their simulation puts pilots inside a highly detailed F-18 fighter jet cockpit flying over the ocean. Pilots must determine from the sounds and information coming across the cockpit radar and displays whether there is an aggressor aircraft in range and how to take it out with a missile. One VR station can train a soldier for multiple combat scenarios including driving a tank, reacting under gun fire or reloading a rocket launcher. Accurate training experiences mean soldiers can learn faster, better, and less expensively.

  5. Gamify Learning - VR and AR can immerse students that are used to playing games. Because virtual worlds are so customizable, gamification elements can be added to any situation so that students not only learn, but also have fun.

The potential educational applications for VR and AR are enormous and beyond what is listed here.
